First is the ability to change or select in which directory you want your backups saved. Along with this comes the ability to move your backups from one directory to another. This is accomplished on the Select Directory window.
Second, BackUpReg now saves the individual registry setting for all users defined on the system. This only works if you have defined user profiles by turning on User Profiles from in the "Passwords" applet found in the Control Panel. You also need to make sure that the new option (Option|‘Back Up User Profiles’) is checked (the default is ‘checked’ if profiles are detected).
The third major change is how you select ‘Automatic’ or Manual reset for over write old backup versions. The option select box in version 1.25 has been replace by a toggle menu item
(Options|BackUp options| [Reset to Manual/Reset to automatic]).
If you click on ‘Reset to Manual’ you will select ‘Manual reset’ mode.
You will then be asked if you want to override existing backups when your
backup numbers start to recycle. If you click on ‘Reset to Automatic’ you
are selecting to automatically over write old back up versions. These are
toggle menu items; you will see one or the other not both. The default
is Manual reset mode; so you will see the menu item as ‘Reset to Automatic’.
The Forth change is another new option (Option|Startup Disk options|Real Mode). This option turns on and off the editing of your current Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files when you Update your startup floppy. The edited version of both these files is the one saved to the Startup floppy. When the Real Mode option is checked, along with either of the options ‘Add Autoexec’ and/or ‘Add Config.sys’, then the user’s current Autoexec.bat and/or Config.sys are edited to remove the Win95 comment markers. This, in essence, allows you to run in a cleaner DOS configuration during the registry restore process. When not checked you will use the versions that are currently used by your system. The default for Real Mode is checked.
There is a silly new option called Animation. This menu
Item is just for fun it allows you to make the wizard whirl around and
around. It has no practical purpose, but it’s fun. This wizard does whirl
around on his own while your backing up the registry and during Startup
disk updating.
Under the Manage Backups window, besides the additional ‘Change Dir’ button (used to select a new backup directory) now there is a display of your current registry size. This size includes all the individual user profile registry settings too. You can also ‘Double Click on the disk image immediately above this display and it will toggle the Registry Size display to a Database size display; which displays the size of the current registry backup database. This display also toggles when you delete a registry or change your selected backup directory. Also on the Select directory window if you click on the image of the disks a file list will appear. This is a list of all the 'System' files in the directory you've got selected. These are files with the 'system' attribute turned on..
There have been some fixes too. The registry size is calculated more accurately and the limit on back up number, as selected by the user, is no longer over shot by a count of one. There were also some internal code corrections, but I think I begin to prattle now so that’s that.
Well that's about it; have fun and if you run into trouble you can e-mail me at msowards@ix.netcom.com.
